The field of chemical engineering is in constant evolution and so are the students, whose access to information technology is changing the way chemical engineering problems are addressed. This book is inspired by the difficulties that introducing the use of different software within class hours present. It promotes the need for a textbook that is user friendly and that, at the same time, addresses typical examples within the subjects covered in the chemical engineering curriculum. The aim of this book, therefore, is to provide an introduction that serves as a quick reference guide for the use of different computer software in chemical engineering applications so that students become familiar with the capabilities. It covers a wide range of computer packages from general purpose ones such as Excel®, common mathematical packages such as MATLAB® or Mathcad®, process simulators, CHEMCAD® or ASPEN-HYSYS®, equation-based modeling such as gPROMS®, specialized software including computational fluid dynamic (CFD), or discrete element methods (DEM), codes and optimization software, GAMS®, AIMMS®. The different packages are introduced and applied to solve typical problems in fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, mass and energy balance, unit operations, reactor engineering, and process and equipment design and control, a hand calculation of which is complex and often not even tractable. This is also used to show that real-world problems require the use of simulation and optimization tools. At this point, we highlight that the capabilities of the packages only are introduced, and thus more complex problems are left for advanced users to discover.
