Traditionally, neuroscience has considered the nervous system as an isolated entity

and largely ignored influences of the social environments in which humans and

many animal species live. However, there is mounting evidence that the social

environment affects behavior (and vice versa) across species, from microbes to

humans. Vertebrate species display a remarkable range in social organization, from

living relatively asocial and territorial lives, to being socially monogamous and

living as bonded pairs, to being highly gregarious and living in large social groups.

There is also considerable diversity in social behavior between individuals of a

given species, which can be shaped by early social relationships, neuroendocrine

state, and genetic factors.
