The story of the collection begins in 1888, when a magnificently illustrated four-volume book. Battles and Leaders of the Civil War, was published by the Century Company. The book's hundreds of art works were commissioned from the leading illustrators of the day. Some are still well known, some are forgotten; but almost all were first rate. For source material, the artists used everything from wartime photographs and lithographs to soldiers' notebook drawings. Veterans of the war checked and corrected many details. And several of these most talented artists needed no notes: Ex-war correspondents, they had their own on-scene sketches and memories.
