Nearly fifty years after the end of the most destructive war in history, veterans of WW II still recall the finer points of the aircraft they flew. The passage of time probably makes them remember the aircraft's good qualities far more then the bad points and that is quite understandable. A lot would also depend on the aircraft being recalled. If it was the de Havilland Mosquito, there weren't many bad qualities to begin with! The "Mossie" is still held in high esteem by the British, Dominion and American aircrews who were fortunate enough to fly this superlative warplane.
Stories told of the Mosquito are legion, but some are particularly appropriate. There was the time when a B-26 Marauder crew met a Mosquito over England. The "word" had gotten around that de Havilland had developed a bomber that was faster than most fighters, let alone bombers. The B-26 crew was not convinced and a race of sorts resulted. They knew that their ship had a high top speed and the anonymous RAF crew were not at all bashful about accepting the challenge. The Marauder crew soon wished they hadn't been so bold. The B-26 was pounding along, throttles through the firewall, when the Mossie hammered past, inverted and flying on one engine.
