Under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles imposed by the victorious Allies in June 1919, Germany was forbidden to have a military air force. Furthermore, all aeronautical material extant - some 15,000 aeroplanes and 25,000 engines - was to be surrendered by 1920. However, Germany continued to produce civilian aircraft, many of which had potential for military use, and in 1926 the civil aeronautical company Lufthansa was established. This, together with ostensibly sporting associations such as the Deutsche LuftsportsVerband (DLV), which encouraged gliding activity, screened a great many ex-military pilots and observers for flying roles. And it was not long before military air crew were receiving secret training in the USSR. Germany's new air force was beginning to take shape.

The rise and fall of the Luftwaffe is encapsulated in the section beginning on page 24. In this pictorial study, we have concentrated our attention upon flying suits and gear. The centre section illustrates most of the service and dress uniforms with drawings taken from a 1938 book published for military tailors.
