The Peases are Navy people. Ever since Congress voted Commodore Pease ten numbers for gallantry in action at Vera Cruz in '43, there have been several of them in the service in every generation. During the Civil War, one of them went down in the ill-fated U. S. S. Cumberland before the ram of the Merrimac, firing his last guns as the waves surged over them; while another led the van on the U. S. S. Varum when Farragut forced the forts before New Orleans. During the Spanish War, a Pease, "Crinky" by Annapolis nickname, in command of a converted yacht or "spit kit" as they were facetiously termed in the Navy, engaged and sank four Spanish gunboats in an action off the south shore of Cuba.
