The North American Bald Eagle has long been the symbol of freedom and power of the United States of America. It was only fitting when the first McDonnell Douglas F-15 air superiority fighter rolled off the assembly line in 1972 that it was also named the Eagle.

United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) pilots enjoyed air superiority during the Second World War flying the superb North American P-51 Mustang and the stout Republic P-47 Thunderbolt. The Korean War that followed in 1950 again proved the value of 'owning the skies/ when the North American F-86 Sabre gained a 13 to 1 advantage over North Korea's Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15, which was sometimes flown by Soviet pilots. Americans were again flying against an enemy air force 15 years later, this time in the unfriendly skies over North Vietnam.
