The author examines the relationship between war, politics, and military behavior, focusing on the French and Indian War, 1757-1763. While military actions are included, the author concentrates on the impact of war on late-colonial society and politics. Titus argues that during the process of mobilizing human and material resources for war, Virginians exhibited attitudes and behaviors that throw unfamiliar light on the colony's social order and political culture and reveal that mid-eighteenth century Virginia was not the placid society it was believed to be.
