Recent earthquakes, particularly the 1989 Loma Prieta and 1994 Northridge earthquakes in California, and the 1995 Kobe earthquake in Japan, have caused collapse of, or severe damage to, a considerable number of major bridges that were at least nominally designed for seismic forces. This behavior led to a marked increase in discussion about seismic design philosophy and in the research activity on the seismic design of new bridges and the assessment and retrofit of existing bridges that was initiated following the 1971 San Fernando earthquake. Our involvement in the relevant experimental and analytical research, and in design philosophy development, has led us to attempt to present a unified approach for seismic design of new bridges, and the assessment and retrofit of older bridges which have substandard seismic characteristics. This book, the end product of this effort, is primarily directed towards practicing bridge designers, though the extent of new design and research information, presented here for the first time, should make it of some interest to researchers investigating seismic design of bridges. It should also be appropriate for graduate courses or upper-level undergraduate course in seismic design of bridges
