This is the 2nd edition from 1967 used in classes at Laney College in Oakland, California by the author, Robert Shrader

As stated in the preface, "Incorporated in this one volume is a complete electronics and radio communications theory course that includes practical information and questions required to pass examinations for Federal Communications Commission licenses, both commercial and amateur grades."

Briefly, my interests are in fleshing out a foundation in electricity, electronics and radio from the 1920s through the early 1960s in order to derive a better understanding, as well as more satisfaction in repairing, maintaining and playing with tube technology. I'm also currently preparing to take the first amateur license exam. For some time now I've been tinkering around with several tube radios learning circuitry and schematics.

Electronic Communication:2nd Edition by Robert Shrader is a necessary text for all independent learners. The material is presented in a straightforward manner with graphics at appropriate places to aid in understanding. I'm a visual learner so this is always very helpful. There are even practice problems along the way to exercise your new knowledge. Many folks may never seek out this book for fear of mathematical torture producing extreme stress and anxiety levels. This is simply not so. A couple of years of Algebra and one of Trigonometry make this a fun book, although not a requirement. All new formulas and mathematics are clearly explained. Seriously, you don't have to have worked your way through volumes I & II of Apostol's Calculus. Electronic Communication:2nd Edition shows clearly in easy to understand language that mathematics does, in fact, help us to see and understand our world of wonders much better. I highly recommend this text as one of several the self-learning tube radio and gear fiend must have in their library.

For those interested in gaining a strong knowledge base in electricity, electronics and schematics as related to old tube radios and gear I recommend the following texts as well:

Basic Electricity, volumes 1 -5, a Rider Publication 1954 (This was the first text in my self-education. Highly recommended!)

Basic Electronics, volumes 1 - 5, a Rider Publication 1955 ( This was the second text I read once 'Basic Electricity' was finished. Highly recommended!)

Basic Audio, volumes 1 - 3, a Rider Publication 1959 ( This was the third text that really starting bringing everything together for my interests. Highly recommended!)

Complete Guide to Reading Schematic Diagrams, by John Douglas-Young 1972 (Absolutely necessary if you've never read a schematic as was my case. Very easy to digest. Highly recommended!)

There are many, many excellent texts available but I have found these to be simple, straightforward and a true delight to learn from. These form a solid core of knowledge in this area. Hey, spend just 30 minutes a day going through these texts and you will have so many light bulbs going off in your brain so many ah-ha moments that will make you smile and even laugh. You will discover that learning really is fun!
