Whilst people are still purchasing jewellery, with the current downturn in the economy, it is evident that those shopping for special occasion jewellery are being very selective in what they purchase. Sales of diamonds, pearls and precious stones are up, as is the price of gold, platinum and silver. If you make to sell, the market for quality and high end accessories is still strong and this trend fl ows over into the market place for handmade original jewellery. The public are being specifi c in what they want and are commissioning designers to create speciality gifts made to their specifi c requirements. If you make jewellery for yourself, as gifts for family and friends or to sell, focus on quality fi ndings and metals. Even if you’re using base metals in your projects, ensure that the materials you use are durable. Constructing quality jewellery involves a considerable amount of emotion, time and skill. Ensure your work off ers the wearer more than a few moments of pleasure, especially if it’s being worn or given to commemorate a special occasion.
