Welcome to the new issue of Performance Bikes. The last time I saw Guy Martin’s Martek GSX-R was when I dropped in to say hello in 2011. As usual he was full of plans, talking of 500bhp and highly-illegal midnight test rides as he worked on the bike in his living room. But I wasn’t sure he’d ever get around to finishing it. A man who condenses at least two jobs and one professional sport into the same length day as you and I surely hasn’t the time to build a complex special. Yet three and a half years later, it’s as well-finished as any special I’ve seen. A huge amount of it was made by Guy. He welded, machined, turned parts and tuned the bike himself, only passing it on to others when he reached the edge of his considerable engineering skills. It’s as big an achievement as any road race win. My biggest regret is that I’ll never get to ride it properly. Years ago he offered me a go and finally that time came.
