During the summer of 1970, after I had begun the work described in my contribution to this volume, I discovered a preliminary version of what was to become Grillet's. In it he gradually introduced, one at a time, each of the essential hypotheses of exactness (along with some infinite exactness conditions). Although there was little overlap in our results, they seemed to develop a common theme, namely exactness. The strong connection between these papers and later that of Van Osdol suggested making one volume built around the notions of exactness and of sheaves.
