Political science professor Vile has written or edited several other titles for ABC-CLIO, including Encyclopedia of Constitutional Amendments (1996). In this set, he seeks to provide comprehensive information about the Constitutional Convention for a wide range of readers, including scholars, students, and the general public.

More than 400 entries are alphabetically arranged. The entries cover people (Henry, Patrick; Locke, John); constitutional provisions (Commerce power; Jury, trial by; Suffrage); states and nations (Great Britain, Maryland); committees (Committee on Rules, Committee on Sumptuary Legislation); documents (Bill of Rights, Mayflower Compact); plans and forms of government (Hamilton plan, Monarchy); ideological influences (Puritanism, Scottish Enlightenment); and more. Several entries discuss how the convention did or did not consider the interests of African Americans, Native Americans, and women. Average entry length is two pages, and each entry concludes with see also references and a further reading list. Article text is supplemented by nearly 40 sidebars on topics ranging from dueling to delegates' wives. An introduction offering a general history of the convention is followed by two chronologies: "Key Dates of the U.S. Founding and Its Background" and "Timetables of the Constitutional Convention." Important documents that predate the convention and "Materials from the Convention Debates and after the Convention" are collected in two separate appendixes. Also appended are charts showing the makeup of the convention committees and state-by-state lists of the signers of the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation.
