The two predominant traits in Michelangelo's character, solitariness and wildness, were symbolically present at his birth. The village where he was born, Caprese in Valtiberina, was solitary and wild, on the steep slope of a hill amid oaks, chestnut trees and fields. The house still stands, perched above the village, a rustic mansion, decorated with coats of arms, where the mayors of Florence lived for the six months of their tenure. This office had fallen to the lot of Lodovico Buonarroti during the first half of 1475 and there, on March 6, was born a male child whom he named Michelangelo. Very little is known about the mother.
