In France in the late nineteenth century two strongly contrasting art movements could be discerned: on the one hand the Impressionists and their followers, painting sunlit scenes of essentially bourgeois pleasures; on the other, the Symbolists, who loved to depict a highly artificial world filled with fantasy and myth. Symbolist art embraces a wide spectrum of artists who are not normally thought of under that label.
