The green frog service, made in 1773-74 by the celebrated English potter Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795) in partnership with Thomas Bentley (1730-1780), is a masterpiece of decorative art.

Wedgwood received Catherine II’s order for the manufacture of a large dinner and dessert service in 1773. According to her requirements, the service was made of creamware perfected by Wedgwood and known as Queen’s ware. The service was specially designed for a palace then being built by the architect Yuri Velten in St. Petersburg’s environs, near Kekerekeksi (in Finnish, Frog Swamp), to be later named the Chesme Palace. Each piece was decorated with painted scenes of Great Britain and bore the crest of a green frog, the latter inspiring the unusual name given to the service in Russia. Intended for fifty persons, the service, according to traditional accounts, consisted of 952 pieces adorned with 1.244 views of England, Wales and Scotland. 770 pieces of twenty-eight shapes have survived intact to the present day.

Сервиз с зеленой лягушкой – уникальный памятник прикладного искусства, созданный в 1773-1774 гг. прославленным английским керамистом Джозайей Веджвудом (17730-1795) в содружестве с компаньоном Томасом Бентли (1730-1780).
