Until now the first historically valid date in the life of El Greco was was 1570. when he was in Rome as a twenty-nine-year-old painter. It was generally accepted, on the ground of a suggestion made some eighty years ago, that he came as a lad to Venice, where he learned his trade. Although no historical basis whatsoever existed for this belief, nearly all writers on El Greco would have him around 1560 in the city of the Doges and in the studio of Titian.
