However, we cannot ignore the risks and complications of lung transplantation. The problems and the fears that developed very early remain major obstacles to further, or more rapid, use of lung transplantation in pulmonary medicine. At the same time, the list of conditions that could benefit

from the procedure has lengthened and the actuarial survival rates are increasing. Should all this overcast the future of lung transplantation? The loud response from this monograph is absolutely not! This volume, offered by the series of monographs Lung Biology in Health and Disease, presents a comprehensive view of lung transplantation. It reports a multinational experience of basic and clinical scientists who, in fact, have led the journey of lung transplantation. Just about when the series presented its first volume, in 1976, only 39 cases of lung transplantation hadbeen attempted. Today, the experience is about 25,000 combined cases, and the experience is all in this volume. The editors of this volume, Lung and Heart–Lung Transplantation, Drs. Joseph P. Lynch III and David J. Ross, are bringing to the readership the work of 75 authors, all experts in their field, and the multinational experience of six countries. I am extremely grateful to them for this contribution and the opportunity to present it to our readership.
