This book is not a definitive study of submarines. Do not, however, let that put you off buying it. It is a selective history in photographs, drawn largely from my own collection assembled over the last seventeen years, and my ambition has always been to make these images available to a wider audience. The obsession of many collectors with squirreling away photographs for their own private consumption has always struck me as rather sad. I have tried as much as possible to avoid using images from the more obvious sources such as museums and press agencies, partly because many have been seen before, and partly because I cannot afford the reproduction fees. The majority of the early photos are from contemporary commercially produced postcards or privately produced amateur 'snapshots'; the intention is to show both how the submarine developed as a machine and the nature of undersea warfare.
