The swing-wing, twin-engined F-I4 Tomcat is the world's supreme interceptor fighter and is certain to remain so into the 1990s. Designed by Grumman Aerospace Corporation for the US Navy, it combines the speed and manoeuvrability of a dog-fighter with the unique detection and tracking capability of the Hughes AWG-9 weapons control system.

The AWG-9 track-while-scan radar gives the two-man crew of pilot and radar intercept officer the ability to track 24 enemy targets and simultaneously attack six different threats at varied altitudes and distances.

The F-14's versatility is evident in its varied armament capabilities. In addition to the internally-mounted M-61A Vulcan cannon capable of firing 4,000 or 6,000 rounds a minute, the Tomcat can be equipped with any combination of three air-to-air missiles: the long-range Phoenix, the medium-range AIM Sparrow and the short-range heat-seeking Sidewinder, as well as a variety of air-to-ground ordnance.
