Las grandes derrotas del verano y otoño de 1941 dieron paso al contraataque de diciembre de 1941 frente a Moscú. Nuevos carros T-34/76 salidos de las fábricas fueron enviados al frente. Mejor preparados al frío extremo del frente asestaron un duro golpe a la Wehrmacht parada frente a las puertas de Moscú. Los carros alemanes sufrían innumerables averías por el frío y pronto se quedaron casi sin efectivos. Un valor añadido al diseño del T-34/76 era la adopción de unas orugas más anchas, lo que rebajaba la presión del carro sobre el suelo y lo hacía más maniobrable sobre la nieve y el barro.
