In 1855, while the British army was fighting alongside the French and Turkish armies in the Crimean War, a little-known but serious siege was taking place in the eastern corner of Turkey. The city of Kars is close to Azerbaijan in the Russian Caucasus. it is a veritable fortress set within the mountains and overlooking a gorge. The British were giving assistance to the Turkish army by lending experience officers. This let to a clash of cultures, which is demonstrated in the despatches.
