WWI aviation enthusiasts are presented with Volume I of our publication containing photographs focused on the Austro-Hungarian aviation troops, K.u.k. Luftfahrtruppe. Why the Austro-Hungarian aviation? There is something about aircraft of the old Austro-Hungarian Monarchy which has attracted me since I was fourteen, though none of my ancestors had ever lived in the Austro-Hungarian territory... From 1914 to 1918 my great-grandfather and his brothers also wore imperial and royal coats and shed their blood for the Emperor and homeland, however, they did not serve in the elite aviation. Their uniforms were not Austrian grey blue, they were Prussian and the Emperor's name was Wilhelm... So, at the beginning there was no old family photo album as it might be expected... As I browsed various air magazines, I found the lines and especially paint schemes of Austro-Hungarian aircraft the most interesting of all WWI air forces. At my teens I tried to succeed with my study titled "The Camouflages of Austro-Hungarian Fighters" in the contest of students' research works. To my surprise, my work kept getting thumbs up from amazed judges, and it was in the national round when it was finally pointed out that this theme had very little to offer to the development of socialistic Czechoslovakia... Nevertheless, my interest in the K.u.k. Luftfahrtruppe was born and it has become my hobby ever since, though the primary wave of enthusiasm that I experienced while being tracing over the colour appendix of Dr. Martin O'Connor's book "The Austro-Hungarian Air Aces", which I had borrowed from a friend of mine, can never be repeated.
