Captain v. Merkatz was known before the war as one of the most prominent machine-gun experts of the German Army. In the present study, he gives us the benefit of his experience as a commander of a machine-gun unit in the great European war. Perhaps the principal value of this study lies in the clear analysis which it contains of the various classes of machine-gun fire, their application, and method of employment. We know of no other book which has so completely performed this service in respect to machine-gun fire.
