Whiile one faction asserted that the only way the war could have been won was by the infantry launching a head-on assault against an entrenched enemy, another considered that the cost of charging into machine-gun and rifle fire, and contending with fortified positions and barbed wire, was too great. The primary discussion centred around enhanced fire support for the troops versus improved mobility for the infantry itself. In the former case, the infantry would move forward following artillery bombardment and with the tank and aircraft assets available softening the enemy positions. The latter involved an effective combination of fire and manoeuvre with rapid tank and troop movement. A major complication of an evolving military doctrine was the proper use of the tank in battle.
