In the Tank Corps Journal for March 1920, then just approaching its first anniversary, the editor made a specific appeal for contributions. 'This, then is what we want from you, a record of what you have seen and done, each one of you ... Arras and Amiens, Flers and Festubert, your part in these was history and literature. And we want, not only the mud and smoke of it all, but accounts of the littie amenities that made life endurable'.Judging from subsequent issues it was not the most successful of appeals, and when one thins it down to 'the mud and smoke of it all' there is not a great deal to choose from. But there is some, and what there is, is good. A year later the Journal began a new series entided 'Tank Actions for the Month' which ran, off and on, until the June issue (of the now Royal Tank Corps Journal) of 1924, by which time the feature was beginning to suffer from rampant repetition. Selected items from both of these series provide the main element of this book and they represent what might be called a lost archive of superb, first-hand material, since it seems safe to say that most of it has remained almost forgotten for the best part of seventy years. To these the present editor has added other items from the Tank Museum library in the form of unpublished reminiscences, letters and official documents from the period.
