Comparisons where the past is contrasted with the present are popular with many authors for the simple reason that the differences highlighted are generally so great that the reader's immediate reaction is a resounding 'O-ooh!' Sweet music to the author's ear as he reckons he has succeeded in justifying using the oldest ploy in the writer's armoury of getting the reader's attention! Now I promise you I did originally set out to be different and avoid the cliché, but the comparison business proved to be not so much irresistible as quite unavoidable. So I am sorry. I must resign myself to that 'O-ooh!' of wide-eyed comprehension from you. I hope you will understand my predicament and see just why the juxtaposition business is as relevant as it is unavoidable. You'll see what I mean as we go along.
