Since the earliest days of carrier aviation, air cover for (he fleet has been provided by air superiority fighters, a great number of which have been built by the Grumman Air­craft Engineering Corporation.

Grumman was formed on 6 December 1928. with total capital of S64.000.00. The com­pany was founded by Leroy Kandle Grumman and five other aeronautical engineers and businessmen.Their early designs were innovative and included the first military air-craft with retractable landing gear and the first military float plane with its own retract­able landing gear (creating a new class of aircraft — the amphibian). Grumman's design for the folding wing (later to be called the sto-wing) that reduced the span of the folded wing to that of the horizontal stabilizer, made it possible to carry more aircraft on a car­rier. These and other innovations placed G rum man in the forefront of U.S. Navy aircraft production during the 1930s. When the Second World War began. Grumman shifted to full scale war production and during the war 31.376 Grumman aircraft were produced. 17.573 were built by Grumman and 13.803 by the General Motors Eastern Aircraft Divi­sion, which produced the FM-I. FM-2. TBM and some 330 J2F-3 Ducks under license.
