The Images of America series celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns, and cities across the country using archival photographs. This volume is dedicated to Fort Riley, Kansas, founded in 1853 to protect merchants and settlers on the Santa Fe and Oregon-California Trails. Fort Riley kept the peace during the Civil War, and in 1893 a cavalry school began operation here. It continued to train cavalry after World War I, and served as the training site for more than 150,000 troops during both world wars. William McKale is the director of the Fort Riley Museum.
