This training directive provides a working doctrine for units of the field army and of the tactical air force. Its purpose was to establish the urgently needed revision of the principles, means, and procedures set forth in FM 31-35, "Air-ground operations", 13 August 1946. Chapters describe employment of tactical air power, organization and command, joint planning, air-ground operations system, the tactical air operations system, joint operations center (field army-tactical air force), offensive and reconnaissance air support of airborne operations, communications, tactical air reconnaissance, and finally strategic bombardment aviation in close support of ground forces.
