The Sidam self-propelled anti-aircraft gun was developed by OTO Melara and accepted to service with the Italian Army in 1987. Vehicle is fitted with four Oerlikon KBA 25-mm guns. Each gun has a rate of fire of 570 rounds per minute. The Sidam usually fires short 15 - 25 round bursts. This vehicle can engage air targets flying 50 - 300 m/s. It also has significant capabilities against light armored vehicles and personnel. It uses HE-FRAG rounds against air targets and armor-piercing rounds against ground targets. The Sidam carries 600 HE-FRAG and 30 AP rounds. Vehicle is fitted with optronic fire control system and laser rangefinder. The Sidam lacks radar hence it can engage air targets only when weather conditions are good. Armor of the Sidam provides protection against small arms fire and artillery shell splinters. Vehicle has a crew of three, including commander, gunner and driver. The Sidam uses chassis of the M113A1 armored personnel carrier. These APCs were license-produced by OTO Melara. Vehicle is powered by the Detroit Diesel 6V-53 diesel engine, developing 215 horsepower. The Sidam is fully amphibious and is propelled on water by it's tracks.
