At times the available information on events preceding the actual aircraft impact will not be sufficient to justify specialization in one causal area. A thorough impact analysis is, then, the first logical step in obtaining complete data. Upon arriving at an accident scene, make an overall survey to ascertain component location and impact damage . This visual survey must next be transcribed into a pictorial representation so component trajectories or paths may be established . This wreckage diagram will often yield sufficient data, along with the damage assessment, to provide information relative to the airplane's configuration and attitude upon impact. This information can be utilized later on so that an accurate individual component impact analysis can be performed. We have found that, at this point, it is often very helpful to sketch a "free body" diagram which indicates the principal forces acting upon the aircraft at impact. This diagram will assist in the correlation of impact marks found on the various hydraulic actuators and movable surfaces.
