THE mounting of weapons and armour on a wheeled chassis poses relatively fewer engineering problems than the development of an equivalent tracked vehicle and so it is not unnatural that the introduction of the armoured car preceded that of the tank by several years. The British kept their armoured car forces busy during the inter-war period with a diversity of operations in aid of the civil power, although most of the vehicles were still based on truck designs. Cross-country mobility was usually poor as a result and the development of fast and light tanks—such as the Vickers—tended to eclipse the wheeled vehicle for such tasks as exploitation and reconnaissance. But the Germans and French, among others, were not content with ad hoc conversions and began to develop armoured cars from first principles, with a significant increase in cross-country mobility as top priority. For example, a German requirement in 1928 led inter alia to the Bussing NAG Sd.234 series whose performance in World War II in Western Europe, Russia and North Africa was comparable with the best light tanks of the period.
