Although Germany never completed their potentially formidable carrier "Graf Zeppelin" during WWII, they did manufacture 70 fighters intended for operations from the vessel. Lacking a carrier from which to operate, these fighters were assigned to various fighter units of the Luftwaffe, often operating from small islands resembling a human-made carrier, at least to the pilots, in terms of size and general environment.

This fascinating history, for a long time ignored or overlooked, has been told in exquisite detail by Francis Marshall in his two excellent books on the subject (Mars­hall 1994, 2002). Truth be told, all that is likely to sur­face on the history of the Bf 109T, is presented in those books.
