The reasons for the ice hazard and the ice forms have been reported in Technical Notes of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. The weather conditions under which ice forms have been discussed by Wesley L. Smith.

For the purposes of the present report it is sufficient to say that the major risk** due to the formation of ice upon the airplane arises when the aircraft is operated through an atmosphere of mist, fog, or cloud, the temperature of which may range from 0°C to at least -20°C and when the relative humidity is high, usually 90$ or above.
