In 2010 we celebrated th 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, the conflict that turned the Spitfire into a legend. This year the iconic fighter clocks up its 75th birthday. On March 5, 1936 "Mutt" Summers was flown over from Martlesham Heath to Easleigh near Southampton where the sleek, hand-built Type 300 awaited him. The outcome of his test flight was to tell all around him: "Don't touch anything!" As you will read inside, getting that perfect prototype into production was a difficult task, but the spitfire was to prove itself as a potent weapon of war, entering the psyche of the Allied nations.
