HAWKER PRODUCTS have always differed from those of most other British aircraft manufacturers in one important respect. Whereas many diversified and produced varied designs, both civil and military of differing layouts for assorted duties, Hawkers have largely stuck to one single configuration at a time. They developed that design to the extreme limits, thereby becoming a leader in their own field of aviation progress. This is not to say that other layouts and designs have not been attempted. But, almost without exception, these designs which diverged from mainstream development never got off the drawing board. H G Hawker Engineering Company Ltd was registered on November 15, 1920. Registered office was in the Canbury Park Road premises at Kingston-upon-Thames, formerly occupied by Sopwith Aviation Company Ltd, one of the great pioneering firms and a prolific manufacturer during World War I. The new company was largely founded to replace the older one, which had run into severe financial trouble after the Treasury had inflicted a gigantic claim for Excess War Profits Duty earlier in 1920. As a result the Sopwith company had to be wound up, and although all debts were met in full, it meant the end of the Sopwith brand name in aviation.
