This book is essentially a military review ol the barbarian invasions from the 5th century BC to the loth century At) in Europe. In it we see successive waves of barbarian peoples from the Celts and the Scythians to the Vikings and Magyars. All these were considered barbaric by their victims who also understood the way they fought as something different from their own organised and more formal attitudes to battle. The barbarian was a hit-and-run warrior. I le was not paid to fight, but lived off his loot. Thus, raiding against soft targets suited his sense of survival much more than a clash of hoplites or legionaries. Whenever possible, he avoided a set battle. Horse riding suited this mode of warfare best and from the Celts in the West to the Huns in the East, the majority of barbarians were excellent horse warriors.
