This chronology provides a snapshot of the history of the U.S. Army from February 20, 1775, when it was established, through December 20, 2008, when the Associated Press reported the number of U.S. combat deaths since the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Written by the author of Chronology of American Military History (2010), it provides researchers the information to develop an overall historical perspective on this huge military organization. Reading a chronology can be like reading a personal date book. For November 1861, nine entries show leaders being replaced, victories being won, McClelland and Lincoln jousting for power, and a loss by Union forces that calls their attention to the Confederacy’s “greatest cavalry leader,” Nathan Bedford Forrest. Researchers are able to follow military leaders dealing with troop support and movement challenges, battles, leadership changes, money issues, and the machinations of politicians. Numerous entries trace African Americans and the military from July 10, 1775, when free African Americans were denied the right to join the military, to the appointment of General Colin Powell as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on October 1, 1989. Sidebars provide additional information about individual military leaders, units, battles, and more. An excellent nine-page bibliography contains resources published in or after 1994, with a majority of the sources being published in the last seven years. Although high-school students can use this book, it will probably be more heavily used by college and general researchers. .
