Historians and laymen alike are familiar with many of the great battles on the Eastern Front. The names Moscow, Stalingrad, Kursk, Belorussia (Belarus today) and Berlin evoke vivid images of the fierce four-year struggle between the vaunted Wehrmacht (German Army) and the massive Red Army. In a view from the foxhole, private soldiers such as Guy Sajer and numerous Russians described the grandeur, brutalities and unmitigated horrors of the war. Finally, legions of historians and military 'buffs' on both sides wrote volumes on wartime campaigns, battles and operations.
