It is an autobiographical account of Lay's desire to fly, his training as a cadet at Randolph and Kelly Fields in the mid 1930s. He describes his experiences with the pre-war pursuit and bomber planes as well as experiences flying the mail in that unfortunate period when the air corps flew the mail routes. It's a fast and enjoyable read of 350 pages written by a man who clearly loved flying (he also wrote "12 o'clock High" and was the historian of the 8th Air Force) and who also knows how to write well.
