"If you wanted to have your picture taken so you could send it home to your girl, you sat in the cockpit of a P-51 Mustang. If you wanted to survive in combat, you climbed into the cockpit of a P-47 Thunderbolt."

"If you were in combat and you wanted to come home, you'd better pray you were in a Thunderbolt."

Hubert "Hub" Zemke repeated these often-quoted statements to the author as he signed a numbered, limited-edition lithograph of a P-47D created by aviation artist Jerry Crandall. Zemke, who commanded the famed 56th Fighter Group during World War II, was always very resolute in his support of the Thunderbolt, but his sentiments were echoed by thousands of fighter pilots who flew Republic's big "Jug" in every theater of World War II. Both statements reflect the rugged dependability of the P-47 that brought many a pilot safely back home after sustaining battle damage that would have destroyed almost any other fighter.
