En 1914, William Albert Murley ingresó en el Real Regimiento de Artillería. Nombrado oficial al año siguiente, antes de concluir la Gran Guerra le fue concedida la Cruz Militar. En el período de entre-guerras el ascenso de los oficiales regulares era lento, pero en 1939 había alcanzado ya el grado de comandante, habiendo tenido diversos destinos, incluyendo el de instructor de personal permanente en un regimiento territorial. Sirvió durante toda la Segunda Guerra Mundial y se retiró como teniente coronel en 1946. Aparentemente, sus treinta y dos años de servicio habían seguido el mismo modelo de centenares de sus contemporáneos; pero había una diferencia.
