In this book we cover the period from 1800 to 1815, from the formation of the Consular Guard to the end of the Imperial Guard. The charge of the Grenadiers a cheval at Marengo opened the Consular era, while that at Waterloo closed the Imperial era.

With the formation of the Consular Guard in 1800, the Grenadiers & cheval consisted of two squadrons, each of two companies. A company consisted of the following:- 1 capitaine, 1 lieutenant en premiere, 1 lieutenant en seconde, 1 sous lieutenant, 1 marechal des logis chef, 4 marechal des logis, 1 fourrier, 8 brigadiers, 96 grenadiers, 1 marechal-ferrant, and 2 trumpeters. The headquarters staff, I'Etat-major, consisted of the following:- 1 chef de brigade, 2 chefs d'escadon, 1 adjutant-major, 2 adjutant-sous-lieutenants, 1 capitaine instructeur d'equitation, (riding instructor), 1 quartier maitre, 1 chirgurgien 2nd class, 2 standard bearers, (porte-etendards), 1 artist-veterinaire, (veterinarian), 5 maitres-ouvriers, (craftsmen), 1 trompette major and 1 brigadier trompette.
