By the beginning of 1944, the once victorious German Army was being pushed back on all fronts. The German 6.Armee had surrendered at Stalingrad in February 1943. The losses were staggering. It is estimated that 300,000 Germans, 200.000 Rumanians, 130.000 Italians and 120,000 Hungarians were either killed or captured. In May of 1943, the Germans had surrendered in North Africa and another 250.000 men were taken into captivity. The attempt to turn the tide on the Eastern Front at Kursk in July 1943 had ended disastrously. British. Canadian and American Armies had landed in Sicily in July 1943 and after capturing the island, had jumped over to the mainland and had already advanced as far as Cassino by the end of the year. The initiative had permanently passed over to the Allied Armies.
