In operational service, both on the Western Front and elsewhere the Armstrong Whitworth FK8 proved to be an effective, sturdy and, above all, dependable combat aeroplane. It was versatile too, being employed for reconnaissance, artillery spotting, contact patrol and ground attack duties as well as night and day bombing throughout the battles of 1917 and 1918.

Two of the 19 Victoria Crosses awarded to airmen in WWI were FK8 pilots and the type was always popular with its crews, yet only five squadrons of the type were operational in France and until now it has remained one of the lesser-documented aeroplanes of the war.
