Charles was born in Brookport, Mississippi, in 1945. He was raised by a single mother who moved her two children to California, finally settling in Escondido, when Charles was eleven years old. He began working with horses just a year later. “My first mentor was Clarence Chown, who was at least in his mid-seventies at the time. He didn’t teach me much about riding, but I sure did learn a great work ethic from him, and I believe that’s what has made all the difference in how successful I have been with horses. He just plain taught me to work hard and never to give up. Clarence had a small ranch where he ran a few cattle. He was still breaking colts at his age when I started helping out on the ranch. I worked for him after school and during all the summer breaks. And I discovered how hard ranch life really was. After that, I stayed with Clarence’s son in Escondido, who had a large ranch, and was shown a lot more about horses.”
