Winslow Homer was a man of many works but few words. In his old age his future biographer William Howe Downes wrote him proposing a book, and received this characteristic reply: "I think that it would probably kill me to have such a thing appear, and as the most interesting part of my life is of no concern to the public I must decline to give you any particulars in regard to it." So whatever we know about Homer's life and mind must be found in contemporary accounts, not very numerous, and in his letters—but above all in his work, in which he left the fullest record of himself.
