Tommaso di Ser Giovanni Cassai, known as Masaccio, was born on December 21, 1401 in San Giovanni Valdarno (Arezzo). He moved with his family to Florence in 1422 where he enrolled as a painter art of physicians and apothecaries. His activity took place mainly in this city, but little is known of its formation, the tradition, that the student wants to Masolino da Panicale is now disproved by the critics, so it's definitely Masolino that receives the influence of the younger Masaccio. With the painting St. Anne Metterza began, however, a collaboration between the two artists.

Ranked by many scholars as the greatest master of early Italian Renaissance painting, Masaccio was the first artist to use light effects to create three-dimensional images on a two-dimensional plane. This achievement, revolutionary in Masaccio’s day, is one of the painter’s significant contributions to art history.
